Richard Downs is the spokesperson for the Alyawarr people,

who have walked off their community at Ampilatwatja

against the NT Intervention and

established a protest camp

outside the boundaries of the Prescribed Area.

Harry Nelson is a senior Warlpiri elder.

His community of Yuendumu has also been at the forefront
of resistance to the Intervention,
holding off the Income Management system
for many months in 2008 and now refusing to sign long-term
leases demanded by the government.

Robbie Thorpe is a local indigenous activist.

Musical Missional Festival: Urban Seed and Cornerstone in Bendigo

This past weekend was spent at a Missional Festival in Bendigo in country Victoria which was organised by two intentional Christian communities - Urban Seed and Cornerstone.  Cornerstone has always kept itself in the bush and in Australian rural and regional towns.  Great to see The Seeds, much newer than The Stones, branching out and away from Melbourne.  The guest speaker for the weekend was Tom Sine of Mustard Seed Associates.

The weekend was illuminating, inspirational and encouraging.  What more could one want....well, only great company and good food and that was there too.

I love the pictures above of Tom with Dave Fagg (Urban Seed) and Laurie McIntosh (Founder and National Director of Cornerstone) in conversation.  Seems to me like a baton is being passed there to young Dave don't you think?

  Miss Eagle grew up in Bowen, North Queensland,

and remembers the story John Chamberlain,

conductor and energiser of the Bowen Choral Society,

used to tell about his wife Mary.

Mary used to be involved in a lot of musical activities

for troops and others in World War II.

Her repertoire used to regularly include Bless This House.

John used to say Mary was known as

Mary "Bless This House" Chamberlain.  ...smile...with fondest memories...

Multifaith Week 2009 in Melbourne

Last week was Multifaith Week in Melbourne.

On Sunday morning, I attended the Sikh Gurdwara at Blackburn

as a guest of my friend Jessiee Kaur Singh.

It was a beautiful experience.

The shrine pictured above contains the holy scripture entitled the Gurū Granth Sāhib

People come in (queues are separate for men and women and they sit separately),

place coins in a large receptacle, bow/kneel and go to their place of prayer.

Large screens are either side of the shrine with excerpts of the scripture

which are chanted.

The scriptures are displayed in the language of the Sikhs,

then in English, and then phonetically.

It was easy to chant along with the rest of the congregation.

There were announcements - but not in English, sadly.

And then little girls came around with boxes of tissue.

We took one and then a man came around with dollops of

sweet mixture from a bowl.  "Healing" whispered Jessiee.

A different take on Communion, thought I, since the Sacrament can

also be taken as Healing. 

Before the service I had seen people "laying the table" in a manner of speaking for lunch.

Each place was laid with a metal compartmentalised tray, a metal cup, and a spoon.

I counted sixteen places across eighteen rows.

But when I came from the service I found that there were a couple more rows.

Then where we ate was at tables.

It looks like the place settings go on forever.

I estimated that there were about 400 to 500 people fed at this sitting.

Apparently, about 5000 meals are served a week on

Wednesdays and Sundays.

Although, if people come to the Gurdwara and need

food on other days, they will be provided for.

Needless to say, with such crowds hand-washing

is important and extensive hand-washing facilities are provided.

All this happens by donation and helpers are on a rotation roster.

I spoke to a group of women relaxing after their morning roster.

They do the last Sunday of the month.

As you can see from the list of needs above, all this is donated.

for an Aboriginal tree-planting ceremony.

A Journey to Silver Wattle: reflection and nourishment among Friends

As Lewis Carroll had the King say to the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland -
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.

To-day is a new beginning.
Quakers in Australia have long held a dream -
a dream for a study centre.
To-day the dream comes to fruition as
Quakers move into Silver Wattle
beside Lake George in New South Wales.

In the next few hours,
I will be leaving my home in Melbourne
to drive to Silver Wattle
where I will serve as chief cook and bottle washer
for the interesting collection of people
who staff and organise the Centre
and who will come to the Centre
for courses and retreat.

My trusty eleven year old station wagon
is packed to the gunwhales.
I really don't know how to travel light.
But food is a serious and creative busines
and I want to be sure there are certain things in place.

In the wagon are

• boxes of herbs to begin a kitchen garden
• boxes of preserves - jams, marmalades, syrups, chutneys, pickles, sauces - with thanks to Pat, Tessa, and Belinda.
• there is a large plastic container full of recipe books.  I am sure there will be people at Silver Wattle who are passionate about food.  They might like to leaf through the recipe books and chose some favourites. Communal menu preparation, perhaps?
• There is a shopping trolley full of books for study and for reading: a variety which includes Eric Rolls and Teilhard de Chardin and books about the Tao.  Also in there is Advices and Queries and the Rule of St Benedict, that classic of Christian communal life.
• Then there are various kitchen appliances like my Kenwood Mixer, the Furi knives, the cafe griller, the blender.

So the journey begins.
A new project at Silver Wattle.
My journey from Melbourne to Lake George.
A new chapter in my spiritual life.
New friendships to make.
A beginning to be held in The Light.

Who are we who live in Australia

that we can not do better than this?

Their case is not even the worst scenario.

They live in a mainstream town

where half the population are white.

I used to live there.

This sort of thing happened then.

I had no solution then -

however we have a government now

who professes to be doing something

and is failing.

Without our pestering,

I believe it will continue to fail.

The dominant values of our society

are said to be of Judaeo-Christian tradition.

The Koran, sacred book of Islam,

is connected to that tradition as well.

And this is what the Book of the Prophet Isaiah

says in Chapter 48.

This is a forceful modern paraphrase

and Yahweh is speaking:

This is the kind of fast day I'm after:
to break the chains of injustice,
get rid of exploitation in the workplace,
free the oppressed,
cancel debts.
What I'm interested in seeing you do is:
sharing your food with the hungry,
inviting the homeless poor into your homes,
putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad,
being available to your own families.

Do this and the lights will turn on,
and your lives will turn around at once.
Your righteousness will pave your way.
The God of glory will secure your passage.
Then when you pray, God will answer.
You'll call out for help and I'll say,

'Here I am.'

A desert experience brings a life change

Paul Connolly had an intervew with Ana Kokkinos in Sunday Life last Sunday July 26/09.

The interview was broken up into five paragraphs. I liked Paragraph 4 titled Finding her heart in the Red Centre...

In the late '80s I quit my job as a solicitor. I enjoyed the job but felt I'd come to a fork in the road. I could see my career mapped out, but I also had a passion to be a filmmaker. I needed to get away from Melbourne, so my partner, Mira Robertson, and I travelled to central Australia and let it wash over us. It ended up having a spiritual dimension for me. It felt impossible to experience the landscape and not follow my heart so I applied to film school.

Horns of a dilemma: Diarmuid O'Murchu and The Lord's Prayer

On the horns of a dilemma
(and I don't mean the poor jailed goat)!

Over at Diarmuid O' Murchu's site I found a lovely version of The Lord's Prayer supposedly "based on the original Aramaic - source unknown". I like the prayer. It has struck a chord with me. However....

and it is a big however, Michael Booker at the National Association of Scholars site gives the background to the prayer.

Ah, caution!
I think I should bear in mind what Michael Booker has to say.

But, as a prayer, I think it's not bad. And striking a chord in me - as it undoubtedly does with others - bears witness to our thoughts on the universe, idealistic or psuedo-poetic though they be. So I pass it on here - but without the claims for the 'original' Aramaic.

A blogging milestone

The first post on this blog was on 23 September 2006. The blog is intended to be a repository for spiritual resources with an emphasis on desert spirituality which was defined in the very first post.

In the almost three years since the blog began, there have been times when I seem to have tapped the mother lode and there has been plenty to add and the blog has been a hive of activity. At other times, as life takes over there have been prolonged absences from the blog for which I apologise.

I don't know who reads the blog but I know visitors come from across the world. Unfortunately, some seem to come only for images and I am unaware of where these end up, in spite of asking for the courtesy of attribution for anything that comes from the blog.

Many do come from searches for desert spirituality and I hope they find the resources here on this blog useful.

The purpose of this reflection is that, in spite of the ups and downs of life and the blog, one person from South Africa in the very, very early hours of the morning (AEST) became the 7,000th visitor. 7,000 is not an exciting number in terms of big-hitting blogs. It is quite pedestrian. For me and this blog, though, considering that desert spirituality is not a pursuit of popular or political culture, I consider this a milestone on which I must remark.

Bonhoefer 4 - Update - Video, Fines, Confiscation and Forfeiture

Bonhoeffer 4 Update: Wed 090715 15.39pm

The Bonhoeffer 4 appeared in the Rockhampton Magistrates court this morning. The Magistrate refused to let the four be heard together. They individually pleaded guilty to the charges. Before they were sentenced each defendant spoke powerfully about why they took the action they did.

They were all given fines:

Jessica (Trespass & Obstruction) $1200

Margaret (Trespass) $400

Jarrod (Trespass) $200

Simon (Trespass & Obstruction) $700

The defendants made it clear that they would not pay the fines suggesting that they be given community service or the money go to community organisations that support peace.

Supporters were present in the court room and welcomed them out of the watchhouse when they were released.

At this stage, the police have confiscated some of their property such as mobile phones and cameras despite the fact that the matter has been dealt with in court. These articles have been kept by the state because they were used in the “commission of a crime”. The four are currently in the process of appealing the forfeiture order. Jessica and Simon are unable to be contacted on their phones for this reason.

Welcome to the Defence Dept and may the peace of Christ be with them

Since I have been posting on this blog about the Bonhoeffer 4, the Australian Department of Defence has paid a few visits. Last one was about half an hour ago - but not to the latest post. That surprised me. If you are not a blogger you may not have realised that bloggers usually have a form of statistical tracking system on their blogs which give a range of information. One can't tell who the individual is. I won't know it is you but it tells me who the provider is and where the broadcast point is. However, in the case of government departments, the department's name is given.

I find it unusual that Defence visits this blog yet over at The Network I am doing identical posts and they haven't visited there. Perhaps they twigged to that early on and are diligent in not wasting taxpayer time and money, do you think?

However, dear media person from the Department of Defence, if you have dropped by to read about the Bonhoeffer 4 being arrested at the Shoalwater Bay defence facility near Rockhampton and then being arrested and appearing in court, I do sincerely hope that you can spare a minute to look more closely at this blog and its range of spiritual resources which can enrich your life. Only a minute or perhaps two....God will do the rest.
